POSITION PURPOSE
To Ensure that facilities are painted and maintained in a safe, attractive, effective and efficient manner
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships
- Ability to correctly estimate time requirement to perform tasks
- Ability to identify and correctly use painting and finish application/removal materials, supplies and equipment
- Ability to correctly follow oral and written instructions
- Possess operational knowledge of the standard practices and methods of painting trade
- Possess functional knowledge of building/construction methods desired
- Possess effective communication skills
- Ability to exercise caution and care in judgement
- Ability to estimate short and long term supplies, materials, and equipment needs
- Ability to recognize when a decision needs to be made
- Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in the painting trade
- Skill in mixing paints and in matching and blending colors
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma
- Valid NC Driver’s License
- Valid NC CDL desired
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends)
Performance Responsibilities and Duties
The employee performs the following essential task and duties in implementation painting plans..
Painting Function
- Applies paint, varnish, stain, enamel and/or lacquer according to State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards; complies with all EPA standards in work performance tasks
- Assists Maintenance Supervisor in designing and planning a district wide painting/restoration plan for schools and central facilities; performs site inspections and make recommendations for plans for interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixture of buildings and other structures
- Reads work orders and/or receives instructions from supervisor regarding painting projects
- Selects pre-mixed paints, or mixes required portions of pigment, oil and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors(s); mixes paints and blends colors
- Spreads drop cloths over floors and room furnishings; covers surfaces such as baseboards, door frames and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting
- Paints surfaces with brushes, spray gun or paint rollers; applies paint with cloth, brush, sponge or fingers to create special effects when needed or directed
- Simulates wood grain, marble, brick or tiles effects when needed or requested
- Erects scaffolding and sets up ladders to perform tasks above ground level; and reports obstacles that prevent the implementation of painting plans to the Maintenance Supervisor
Cleaning and Restoration Function
- Levels surfaces and removes old paint or furnish from surfaces to prepare surfaces for painting
- Clean brushes, sponges, etc. frequently and before storing
- Disposes and discards cleaning agents and fluids safely and in compliance with EPA regulations
- Sand and cleans painted surfaces
- Washes surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover
General Maintenance Function
- Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other filler prior to painting surfaces; prepares and applies patching plaster as needed
- Assists in moving and transferring furniture at school and central sites
- Assists, carpentry, heating/air conditioning, plumbing and electrical maintenance when needed and/or directed
- Removes fixtures (pictures, electric switch covers) from walls prior to painting and replacing them afterward
- Perform other maintenance task assigned as determined necessary by Maintenance Supervisor
WORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to work with paint related chemicals
- Ability to work outdoors in weather conditions that range from hot and humid to cold for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in air-conditioned buildings
- Ability to work off ladders and other tall structures
- Ability to work moderate to high heights
- Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects up to and including 70-100 pounds
- Ability to pull and/or push up to 100 pounds
- Ability to frequently kneel, crouch, crawl, climb and walk
- Ability to stand 75% of time for extended periods without fatigue or discomfort
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to work in office and public school environments, and come into direct contact with staff and students
- Travel is required to schools and Central Services offices
