POSITION PURPOSE


An employee in this class provides specialized physical therapy services for eligible school students.The employee

receives medical directions as to the specific results to be achieved and then exercises  discretion in determining

the clinical procedure to follow. Work involves evaluating students to determine need for physical therapy; developing appropriate therapy programs, including routines for classroom and home adaptation; and providing

therapy to students. Services include direct service and/or consultation with school staff, families, medical personnel, community agencies, and others as needed.Employees are responsible  for documenting planning and treatment activities, preparingreports of students’ progress, and consulting with parents and classroom teachers. Employees are also responsible for modifications of equipment and/or environment and in-service training. The employee is expected to resolve most problems that do not require additional medical diagnosis. Errors in treatment could cause serious harm to students
and ensuing liability for the school system.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Operate instructional and office equipment;
Ability to do simple math in order to compile reports, and maintain records and
status reports;
Interact successfully with parents, students, supervisor, school staff, and
community agency representatives;
Consult with Supervisor when students’ progress is not consistent;
Develop and monitor carry over activities with classroom teacher and home;
Develop and provide creative, appropriate lessons/materials to ensure progress
towards student IEP goals;
Consult and support Regular Education Teacher with use of pre-teach, re-teach
strategies to successful inclusion and IEP goals;
Work with students individually and in small groups;
Develop schedules for student services that meets current IEP services.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
 Graduation from a four-year accredited program of physical therapy and two years of
experience or a master’s degree in physical therapy; or any equivalent combination of
training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licensed as a physical therapist by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy.
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.



CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from a four-year accredited program of physical therapy and two
years of experience or a master’s degree in physical therapy; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities. Licensed as a physical therapist by the North
Carolina Board of Physical Therapy. Possession of a valid driver’s license
issued by the State of North Carolina.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, walkers, standers, seating systems, wheel
chairs, canes, crutches, splints, body jackets, goniometers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 40 pounds of force
occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise
move objects.
Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondences, medical records, educational records, test results,
directives, requests, etc.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to understand procedures
Provides in-service training to teachers and other school personnel, as needed, assists with education,
orientation and preparation of receiving school staff and students regarding issues, concerns and information
about “inclusion” of exceptional children in regular school and classroom programs.
Supervises physical therapist assistants.
Provides clinical education for therapy student interns from colleges and universities.
Plans, orders and maintains departmental supplies and equipment; maintains records as required.
Travels between locations where students require services.
Maintains clinical and administrative records in accordance with State Guidelines and school board policy.
Completes random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
Performs other related work as required.


WORKING CONDITIONS


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential duties require, but are not limited to, the following physical abilities:
Sit at a desk, table, on low chairs, on the floor or on mats, or in classrooms of
various configurations for extended periods of time.
See, read and distinguish colors, a computer screen, educational materials, books
and other printed matter, with or without vision aids.
Manual dexterity to enter data into a computer, and to perform assigned classroom
tasks using both hands.
Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and outdoors, and to
hear and understand speech on the telephone.
Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal
classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
Move quickly on uneven terrain, play yards, and school grounds.
Push wheelchairs or pull wagons with students.
Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist
height; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate,
neat, and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate
the results of decisions and judgments.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to work in office and public school environments, and come into direct
contact with staff and students
